Description

Key Characters:

Growth Form: Spindly shrubs or trees up to 5 m tall, trunk straight, slender.

Stems: Branches long, slender, ± pendent, pubescent when young, becoming glabrate.

Roots:

Leaves: Leaves simple. Opposite. Blades ovate–elliptic to narrowly elliptic, (2–)4–8(–18) cm long, (1–)2–3.5(–7.8) cm wide. Apex acute to acuminate. Base acute, rounded to subcordate or tapering. Upper surfaces glabrous; lower surfaces pubescent at least along the midrib or glabrous, petioles pubescent or sometimes glabrous; pale to dark green on upper surface; lower surfaces lighter, chartaceous, (2–)4–8(–18) cm long, (1–)2–3.5(–7.8) cm wide. Margins entire. Pinnately veined. Petioles thin, 4–10 mm long. Stipules absent.

Flowers: Flowers in peduncles 2–10(–30) mm long, ± puberulent, often curved, rachis clavate to conical, gradually prolonged, 2–20(–30) mm long, hirsute, sometimes forked, pedicels minute, minute bracts rarely observed. Flowers unisexual, yellow or greenish yellow, puberulent. Calyx tube of staminate flowers 4–5(–7.5) mm long, outer lobes 1.4–4 mm long, 1–3.2 mm wide, inner lobes 1–3 mm long, 1–3 mm wide; Calyx tube of pistillate flowers 3– 4(–6) mm long, outer lobes 1.4–3 mm long, 0.9–2.1 mm wide, inner lobes 0.9–2 mm long, 0.8–2.1 mm wide. Corolla (petals) absent. Stamens 8, the lower whorl included, the upper whorl sometimes shortly exserted. Ovary superior, 1-celled; ovules solitary and pendulous.

Fruit: Fruit crimson to dark lilac red; ellipsoid; 8–16 mm long; 5–8 mm in diameter. fruit drupaceous. Seeds without endosperm.

Ploidy: 2n = 18*

Habitat: Rather common in dry to wet forest.

Elevation Range: 0–1,500 m.

  • The size and shape of the leaves are quite variable within lAikstroemio sandwicensis. Small-leaved and narrow-leaved forms are not uncommon. They are connected to the more typical large-leaved forms by a series of intermediate forms. Leaves of different size and shape often appear on a single specimen. Young shoots and suckers with very enlarged foliage are also rather com- mon. Wikstroemia sandwicensis should be the subject of closer studies.
